Friday’s Odds and Ends

joke meme
Thought a joke first might be in order.

This may or may not be my last commentary about the political scene, but I will try my best to not rail against the candidates too often.

IN RECENT NEWS

The Trumster has realized he has to soften his stance on the immigration issue, as well as tone down his racist rhetoric. All that because he is trailing Clinton in national polls and his campaign managers must have been telling him to cool it. In an interview last Wednesday he said he is changing his policy to deport illegal immigrants, saying he would be willing to work with those who have followed U.S. laws while living in the country.

Not amnesty, Trump pointed out, “No citizenship. Let me go a step further – they’ll pay back taxes, they have to pay taxes, there’s no amnesty, as such, there’s no amnesty, but we work with them.”

Apparently Trump is going to appeal to African American voters directly by going to cities with high black populations. He is scheduled to go to Detroit, and Ben Carson is going with him.

I was disappointed to read that Carson has jumped on the Trump wagon. I had a lot of respect for Carson, and was even pulling for him to beat Trump in the primaries, but I have lost some of that respect. Granted, I know it is a clever political move to have a prominent African American stand next to Trump, as if that will dilute Trump’s racism, and the sad thing is that some people will nod in relief.

Read my lips! Nothing is going to change who the Trumpster is. He is a bigot, a hothead, totally clueless about diplomacy and how to behave in public, totally self-absorbed, and not a team player.

That is not the kind of person who should be leading this country. If you are a supporter because you think his fresh, brash approach is just what we need, think again.

And if you are a supporter just because you don’t want Hillary as president, there are other choices.  The Libertarian Party has Gary Johnson and William Weld running for president and vice president respectively. Both Johnson and Weld are former two-term Governors and both won re-election by appealing to all voters. HERE you can read how Johnson stands on issues we all are concerned about.

HILLARY on the issues.

TRUMP on the issues.

FRIDAY FUNNIES

auntyacidquote

From Maxine:

My doctor told me to start killing people.

Well, not in those exact words. He said I need to reduce the stress in my life.

Same thing, really.

From a  friend about aging:

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, ‘For fast relief.’

Kids talk about marriage and dating:

How would you make a marriage work?

Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a dump truck.

What do people do on dates?

On the first date they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go on a second date.

How do you decide who to marry?

No person really decides before they grow up who they are going to marry. God decides it way before and you get to find out later who you are stuck with.

WRITING WISDOM

This is from a post at Writer Unboxed by Sharon Bailly about querying agents and editors even if we might self publish a book. She encourages writers to do the query letters about 6 months from making the decision to self-publish. Bailly, who is in the business of promoting authors, has a couple of reasons for her suggestion about querying.

Writing the query letters helps you with your two-minute elevator pitch, as you have to describe your story in a few short sentences to grab the attention of the agent or editor.

Bailly also says that the experience of querying agents and editors and dealing with the rejections can toughen us up for the experience of book promotion. When we are sending out requests for reviews, interviews, and appearances on TV, we will get lots of rejections before we get an acceptance. It is part of the business. As is querying agents and editors, so we might as well get prepared.
