Friday’s Odds and Ends

I’ve teamed up with 8 other authors to sponsor a neat contest at the Kindle Book Review. You can enter to win a 10″ Kindle Fire HD in the 2018 Memorial Day Giveaway, and find some good reads for only 99¢. Hop over to the contest and enter before it ends on May 31. I’m sponsoring with Open Season, the first book in the Seasons Mystery Series.

Now a little something to bring a smile. The picture was taken when my daughter brought her little dog up to visit one of my cats. Harry and Lola have been buddies for a while, and Lola, who is quite old now, seems to get energized when she gets to come for a visit.

In The News – President Trump sent a letter to North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, calling off the planned summit meeting in June. This was a personal letter, written by Trump himself, not his staff, in which he cited “increased hostilities” as his reason for the cancellation. He also included a sentiment that he was saddened at having to cancel, as he considered the summit a “great opportunity for peace.”

You can read the full story at USA Today

In contrast to that favorable story about Trump, on December 2, 2015, the date of the mass shooting in San Bernadino, California, Trump was a guest on Infowars, a radio show and website run by, and for, conspiracy theorists. Alex Jones owns the site, and Trump praised it when he was a guest that December day. Trump said, “Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down.”

Infowars has claimed that the school shootings at Sandy Hook and at Parkland in Florida, were staged by the government as a  “ploy to take away our guns.”

Enraged by that claim, as well as by threats and harassment that has caused at least one family to move into a gated community, six families who lost children in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting are suing Alex Jones. They are joined by an FBI agent who responded to the attack.

I first heard about the suit, and about Trump’s guest appearance on the site, by listening to The Daily this past Thursday. I was shocked when I heard about Trump’s support of a place that promotes such absurd theories. I was also shocked to hear how these families have been victimized over and over as they are harassed by Infowars devoted followers. Followers, by the way, that significantly increased in numbers after the Trump guest appearance in 2015.

On YouTube alone, Jones had 2.3 million followers, and I was pleased to read that YouTube froze the Infowars account after Jones put forth the idea that the Parkland Shooting survivors had been coached in their pleas for gun control

You can read more about Infowars and the conspiracy theories the site promotes in this article by William Finnegan in The New Yorker. I find the Infowars site so dispicable, I will not include a link to it. I was, however, amused when I did research about Trump and Infowars, to see that Alex Jones is now lambasting Trump and has done so for the past year.

How fleeting love can be. 🙂

Just for Fun –  These jokes are courtesy of The Laugh Factory

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “That’s the ugliest baby that I’ve ever seen. Ugh!”

The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, “The driver just insulted me!”

The man says, “You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I’ll hold your monkey for you.”

One day Jimmy got home early from school and his mom asked, “Why are you home so early?”

He answered, “Because I was the only one that answered a question in my class.”

She said, “Wow, my son is a genius. What was the question?”

Jimmy replied, “The question was, ‘Who threw the trash can at the principal’s head?'”

A little girl is serving her father tea while her mother is out shopping. The mother comes home and the father says, “Watch this!”

The little girl goes and serves the mother tea. The mother says, “Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?”

An Amish husband, wife and son travel to the city on vacation. They visit a shopping mall and while the mother is shopping, the father and son are standing in awe in front of an elevator (having no idea what it is).

As they watch, an elderly lady walks into the strange silver doors and the doors close. The father and son watch as the numbers go up, and then back down. When the doors open, a beautiful young woman walks out. The father leans over and whispers to the son, “Son, go get your mother!”

That’s it for me, folks. Do let me know what you think about Infowars, as well as which joke was your favorite. Have a great weekend.
