For anyone who would like a book to help a young student learn some basic scientific facts, this charming book would definitely be perfect for a home library, or a school classroom.
It took me a minute to figure out exactly what the phrases “no metal” “no magic” and “no technology” actually refers to in the book description. Since unicorns are often a big part of fantasy stories I thought the “no technology” was appropriate. There usually isn’t technology in fantasy stories, so I thought that’s what it meant, but the other two phrases puzzled me. Then I read several pages of the book and the proverbial lightbulb went off.
Maybe a young person will have a much faster lightbulb. 🙂
Connecting the different elements of metals to the Unicorns that then activates their magical powers was a fun part of the book, and I’d really like Pearl, the Potassium-Horned Unicorn, to come to my house. Her magic? Anything she touches is instantly cleaned.
Without the metals the Unicorns wouldn’t have their unique magic, and of course, where would we be without the metals that are such an important part of the technology we all rely on.
What a clever way of presenting that scientific truth with the use of a touch of fantasy.
Krypto, the Krypton-Horned Unicorn introduces the reader to Krypton, and of course, my imagination went straight to Superman and what Kryptonite does to his powers. It was a relief to read that the unicorn has no such sensitivity, and his magical ability is left unscathed. He can go invisible at will, but he’d better stay away from Superman. 🙂
Can you tell I had a lot of fun reading this book?
Filled with charming illustrations and really interesting facts about the different elements, this is a book that even people without a scientific bent will find enjoyable. The material is well-organized, with a lot of eye appeal, and young readers will appreciate the similarity to the way a graphic novel is designed.
However, the book isn’t just for children. Adults will surely appreciate a refresher course in metallurgy, even if they never studied it in school.
“A teaspoon of sugar helps the medicine go down,” and a touch of whimsy helps the learning.

Glad you liked that wrap-up. I remember slogging through science classes in school and not enjoying the lessons at all. Definitely not a science person. But a book like this would have peaked my interest back then.
