***** REVIEW *****
The illustrations in this book are quite lovely and the layout is charming, sure to please the eyes of kids of all ages. Picture books are some of my favorites, and I always look at the illustrations, first. Maybe a way to go back to my own childhood?
Whatever the reason, it’s good when the illustrations reflect, and add, to the narrative in a significant way, and these by Ann Keble do a terrific job of showing how much fun the children, and the dogs, had while in training. The two human main characters, Lora and CJ, take their young dogs on the various outings to acclimate them to crowds, and people, and other animals, so the dogs can participate in a Fourth of July parade in their town.
I enjoyed seeing all the places that C.J. and Lora took their dogs, including a fun day at the beach and another day at a farm watching an Australian Shepherd work the sheep.
While the title hints at fiction, the book is more of a training manual than a story. I read the book before checking out the book description, so I was a little off track. Then, after I read the foreword by the dog owner and trainer, Judy Ramsey, I had one of those “aha” moments. That foreword has great tips on introducing a new puppy, or dog, into a family and learning to work with the dog on some basic training and socialization. Those tips are reinforced by the narrative that follows as the children get their dogs ready for the parade.
However, that narrative is a bit clunky and stilted, as is some of the dialogue, and that kept me from completely enjoying the book.
Still, I can endorse The Puppy Adventures of Porter and Midge as a terrific resource for helping kids learn about pet care and responsibility, as well as introducing them to some training techniques. The authors are experienced in all aspects of training and dog ownership and that expertise is evident throughout the book. The authors also reinforce how important it is to embrace a new pet completely and make that commitment to their care and training.
A happy dog is one who knows the rules, as well as knows he or she is is loved.
***** ABOUT THE AUTHORS *****
Giselle Nevada has owned several mastiffs, acquired both from reputable breeders and via rescue. Fostering rescued mastiffs and helping them work through their issues led to a keen interest in socialization as a means of preventing future issues. She loves working with her dogs and has dabbled in carting, conformation, agility, rally, trick dog, nose work, and many other canine sports. Her puppy Porter is a testament to early socialization – he has achieved many performance dog titles and has done commercial work. He also has a role in the movie “Match Me If You Can” directed by Marian Yeager.
Jennie Chen is a homesick Austinite who founded Keep Austin Dog Friendly. Over the last 20 years, Jennie has owned Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and Lowchen. She has earned numerous titles in conformation, competitive obedience, rally, herding, animal assisted therapy, and more. She is passionate about the relationship people build with their beloved canines, and she has been an advocate for people living with disabilities who need a service dog to live independently. She is active in various dog clubs and can be seen on AKC.TV from time to time.
