A big wow to the illustrations in this lovely children’s book. I’m a fan of picture books, so I’m always eager to check out a new one, and the artwork is just stunning in A Time To Fly. Kudos to the artist.
The message of a mother’s love as she encourages her child to fly is a subtle one in this story, but obvious, I’m sure to all mothers who reach the point where they have to push a child out of the nest, even though the child is not quite ready to take that step. It is nice to see how gentle the mother bird is, letting the baby have time to find it’s courage to soar, and that’s an important theme of the story. She isn’t harsh or threatening, as she urges him to flap his wings and try to leave the nest, and human mothers could take a page of the bird’s playbook.
While there is much to love about the book, the prose had some weak points, one of which was a repetition of “tweeted” that could have been replaced in the conversation between the mother and the baby bird. There were also some typos that could have easily been fixed. However, the little problems didn’t stop me from enjoying the book and eagerly continuing on to see how, and when, the baby bird would find the courage to leave the nest and join the family in a flight south for the winter.
And, as mentioned earlier, the watercolor illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the book is worth having to enjoy them as much as the story. A Time to Fly will make a perfect bedtime read for toddlers.
