Her struggle with her own creative processes boils over on a stormy night, when Captain Edward Peregrine, a pirate of the Caribbean during the year 1721, begins appearing to her as she sleeps. Convinced that Edward is a figment of her imagination, Kate happily accepts his return visits, and the two collaborate on the first two books of the series. Then, Edward suddenly stops appearing, and Kate is frustrated with her publisher’s demands for the next book.
In desperation, she decides to take a two-week cruise with her granddaughter, Ellie, hoping the chance to relax and watch the waves breaking in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean will reset her creative process. Little did Kate know that troubled waters lay ahead or that she’s in for the adventure of her life, and possibly, true love at long last.

Who doesn’t love a handsome pirate who is kind to the people he captures and seems to have the heart of a Robin Hood? This is the character that Kate has created in Edward Peregrine, the hero of the first book in her successful romance series. That series seems to be faltering when we meet her in the opening of this story.
Her publisher is pushing for Kate to add more details to sex scenes, and Kate is reluctant, holding to the premise that less is more. But the publisher insists that the fans want Edward to have more liaisons, complete with the passion on the paper. Kate decides that perhaps a cruise with her granddaughter Elle, might help her get past the current writers block.
Edward is Kate’s muse and had been visiting her in her dreams and semi-conscious state, to talk through ideas for the stories, but he had suddenly stopped appearing. Kate hopes that the Caribbean cruise, where she will be visiting parts of the sea that Edward surely sailed on centuries ago, will entice him to come back. And if he doesn’t, maybe the cruise itself will unstick the story she needs to be writing.
I couldn’t help but wonder if Edward is simply a figment of Kate’s imagination that she has these vivid dreams about. Or is there an element of time-travel involved? It’s definitely hinted at, especially in a scene close to the end that is one of the most magical of the story. To avoid spoilers, I won’t say any more about that, and I suspect that future novels will add more intrigue to that part of the plot.
Margie wrote Someday Belongs to Us with a story-within-a story-structure, and it works well. Each narrative has it’s own style, making them distinct, yet parallel. Edward has returned to Kate’s dreams, and his new storyline involves a love interest and some of the passion that the publisher has asked Kate to include in future novels. Edward’s evolving romance with Millie partners well with Kate’s experiences on the cruise, where she meets two intriguing men who fire a spark of romance in her.
Reading about Kate and Edward was pure escapism fun, which is what a romance novel is supposed to accomplish. I particularly liked seeing a heroine close to my age who is portrayed as young at heart, and willing to step out of her comfort zone and try new things, especially the dance contest. Kate’s relationship with her granddaughter was another delightful aspect of the book that was very well done. I could laugh along with them as they bantered and teased each other.
If that is your kind of story, I encourage you to give Someday Belongs to Us a try.
