BOOK BLURB: A call from a ghost hunter changes Deputy Tempe Crabtree’s vacation plans. Instead of going to the coast, she and her husband are headed to Tehachapi to investigate a haunted house and are confronted by voices on the wind, a murder, and someone out to get them.

REVIEW: There is quite a bit to like about the books that Marilyn Meredith writes. The Tempe Crabtree series, seventeen so far, has become very popular because readers can relate to Tempe as a strong, determined, capable detective, and her American Indian heritage adds another dimension to the stories. The plot is excellent with a very intriguing mystery and lots of possible suspects that make it almost impossible for the reader to guess who the murderer is until the final reveal.

There are also good descriptions that set the reader firmly in the setting as well as establishing the characters. The relationship between Hatch and Tempe is always interesting, reflecting how a true marital partnership operates.

What I find slightly irritating about the books is the use of generalities such as “there were various items on the shelves.” In a writing class I took some time ago, I remember the professor telling us that little details place the reader firmly in the place; in the moment. I think of that every time I read a book that skims over the opportunity to do just that. Most of the time Marilyn uses details very effectively, which makes these little slips even more noticeable.

Still that’s a small issue in relation to the rest of the writing which is smooth and very enjoyable, and it may only bother someone like me who has spent too many years editing. Those little blips certainly don’t detract from the overall story or a reader’s ability to enjoy the read. I recommend this book for your summer reading list.
