Rate this book
A reluctant vampire hunter, stalking New York City as only a scorned bride can.

Elle Dupree has her life all figured out: first a wedding, then her Ph.D., then swank faculty parties where she’ll serve wine and cheese and introduce people to her husband the lawyer.

But those plans disintegrate when she walks in on a vampire sucking the blood from her fiancé, Greg. Horrified, she screams and runs—not away from the vampire, but toward it, brandishing a wooden letter opener.

As she slams the improvised stake into the vampire’s heart, a team of black-clad men bursts into the apartment. Turning to face them, Elle realizes Greg’s body is gone—and her perfect life falls apart.

Legally Undead (Vampirarchy #1) By Margo Bond Collins and Narrator Laurel Schroeder is an audio book I requested and the review is voluntary. This is a fresh and exciting vampire hunter story. It is hard to find a different vampire story, it is so filled with the same stuff. This is different and exciting. A great book that keeps you wanting to read, heart pumping, great suspense, that damn Greg vamp popping up everywhere scaring the hell out of me, lots of great fight scenes, good plot, well developed characters, and a touch of humor, a bit bloody but we are talking vampires, duh! LOL I can't wait for the next book. I would give this book more that five stars, I really liked it for the suspense, freshness, and character profiles. The audio narration went with the novel perfectly! Couldn't have picked a better person for this story. Loved this story!!!

OH…MY…GOSH!!!!! THIS BOOK IS FANFREAKINGTASTIC!!! Ok, I got that out of my system, so let me tell you about this completely awesome book.

Legally Dead is book one in the Vampirarchy series by Margo Bond Collins. I had high hopes after reading the synopsis for this book. And let me tell you, Margo Bond Collins delivered on every level possible.

 photo letteropener_zps9c0d17c7.jpg

Let me introduce you to Elle Dupree. She has her life planned out. She’s working on her PH.D and is engaged to her perfect match, Greg. Greg has just been hired on as a lawyer and all of their dreams are within reach. But everything changed the night Elle came home to find a vampire sucking the life out of her fiancé. But that was only the beginning. In a fit of rage, Elle grabs the first thing she sees, a teak letter opener and stabs the vampire in the heart. A group of strange men burst into her apartment and as she looks back at Greg’s body, he…is…gone!

“It’s never easy to see an ex for the first time after you’ve broken up. Seeing an ex for the first time after he’s been turned into a bloodthirsty evil creature of the night is possibly even less easy.”

 photo tumblr_mqpw23uV5a1r5e3noo1_500_zpse0317c19.gif

I think Elle is my favorite female heroine of all time. She is sarcastic, smart, tough and sensitive at the same time, and just full of awesomeness. She has lost her fiancé, to a vampire no less, has been thrust into the midst of a band of vampire hunters, and she takes it all in stride.

There are so many questions, though, that need answering. Who turned Greg and why? What is the connection to the law firm where he worked? After Elle is attacked one night by her ex-now vampire, Greg, the oh so handsome and very human Malcolm, comes to the rescue. He seems more than willing to help Elle solve some of these mysteries but he doesn’t know about the vampires. Does Elle dare tell him the truth?

This book was so different than anything I have ever read. I loved ALL of the characters, well, the human ones that is. As I said before, there is plenty of humor but also, there is lots of vampire killing action, mysteries to solve, a love interest, crazy vampire ex’s, and so much more. I could not put it down. I was completely engaged until the very last page. Just when I thought things were winding down for an ending, well, let me just say that there were a few more surprises in store for me.

 photo stake_zpsdbf3b867.jpg

So, I will say it one more time. This book is just fantastic. I am so thankful Margo gave me the opportunity to read it for her. I can’t wait to see what is in store next for Elle and her band of vampire slayers.

THE REVIEW

Why this book?

It seemed like a book for me

What I thought

This book, what can I say about this book? The premise is interesting. I really liked Nick and his group. Elle kinda bored me she was just a one dimensional character. There barely was any romance; one sex scene, but that’s practically all you get. No Sexual Tension no sparks flying; none. I also found Elle becoming a kick ass vampire slayer overnight was a little unrealistic. It wasn’t all bad though it had interesting characters, some action and it had its moments. Overall an ok book.

There are no sparkly vampires here, and thank goodness! I've been dying to read (no pun intended) a vampire novel where the vampires are actually the bad guys and not sexy bad boys.

Elle is just a regular gal, going to college and hanging out with friends, when she walks in to find her fiancé being bitten by a vampire. At that moment she inadvertently becomes a vampire hunter. I like that she has no special powers or skills or a destiny. She even goes so far as to squeak when vampires jump out at her. She's just a normal woman confronted with the undead, and she does what she must to survive.

I enjoyed this first installment in the series and am looking forward to the next.

I kept thinking to myself, 'this book is terrible, I should just DNF it', but then I'd look up at all the fake gum and whoopee cushions that still need to be quality checked, and with less than the sound my dreams make as they're being crushed return to the book.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

he description for LEGALLY UNDEAD was what originally drew me in (it certainly wasn’t the cover). I was intrigued by the idea of a plain-jane girl all of a sudden discovering the world of vampires, and not in a romantic way. LEGALLY DEAD is most definitely urban fantasy, and follows a similar track as many other UF novels, but it manages to still be somewhat unique and distinguish itself from the pack.

One of the ways that LEGALLY UNDEAD is different than most UF, and what I liked most, is that even though the vampire underworld suddenly appears in Elle’s life, the rest of the story is very real. It’s clear she’s got a life that doesn’t magically disappear the minute she starts to hunt some vampires. She has school, and friends who get concerned for her once she stops going outside at night. And beyond that, she tries to avoid the vampires at first. There’s no rushing toward danger for Elle. She’s got a smart head on her shoulders and until she figures out that it is pretty much inevitable, going after her ex-fiance, she tries to stay out of it.

Another thing is the vampires in LEGALLY UNDEAD are super creepy. These are not your standard sex-appeal exuding, bad-boy vibe emitting vampires that every guy wants to be and every girl wants to be with. The vampires were one of the most interesting parts of the story, but they also were the part that was least developed – partially because since Elle didn’t know much, or couldn’t find out much, neither could the reader. It was a tad disappointing, since I would have loved to learn more.

There are still aspects of your typical urban fantasy novel, though. We’ve got a heroine who can, with no training, suddenly kill vampires just because she gets angry. There’s the vampire hunting team that already knows about the secret vampire underworld. But through all of it, there’s a great sense of humor and the writing is good, and like I said, LEGALLY UNDEAD manages to take some typical features of urban fantasy and make them its own.

While the book doesn’t end in a SHADOW HUNTER level of cliffhanger, it ends in a cliffhanger nonetheless, and left me desperate for the next chapter in Elle’s story. I’ll be curious to see where Collins takes the Vampirarchy series next!

Legally Undead is Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV show) meets Legally Blonde (the movie)--both favorites of mine. Margo Bond Collins gives a whole new meaning to blood-sucking lawyers in this clever new series about grad student Elle Dupree who becomes a reluctant vampire slayer in New York City when her soon-to-be-husband becomes her ex-vampire-boyfriend. Lots of fun and suspense with references to Dracula (the novel), another all-time favorite of mine. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Originally reviewed on Romancing the Dark Side:

In a word...FANGTASTIC!!!

Elle Dupree is on her way to living the perfect life. She’s planning a wedding, working on her Ph.D and her fiancé Greg is working for a prestigious law firm in New York. Things couldn’t be better. The last thing she expected was coming home to a blood thirsty vampire feeding on her soon to be husband and going all Buffy on the vamp, while a team of vampire hunters storm into her apartment to “clean up” the mess she made. In one single night Elle’s world is turned upside down as she learns vampires are real and her fiancé is now a member of the undead club.

LEGALLY UNDEAD is a refreshing tale of an unlikely, but bad ass heroine who has no supernatural powers but plenty of snark. What happens when Legally Blonde meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Elle Dupree, that’s what!

What I find so endearing about Elle is that she’s just a typical college student with no real fighting skills or knowledge of the paranormal up until that night. Her character proves you don’t have to be a supernatural heroine to be fierce! She’s smart, sassy and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in order to survive, gotta love her for that. Her geek girl ways and Dracula references are classic, she had me laughing out loud a couple of times, her inner monologue is entertaining to say the least. Elle is no damsel in distress and quickly adapts to her new life of vampire hunting with the help of her newfound friends, Nick and his fellow hunters. I love that she becomes part of Nick’s team and that they never treat her like a “girl” but as one of their own. Her perseverance is admirable, I don’t think I would have embraced her new life with such bravery had I been in her shoes!

There’s also a new possible love interest for Elle in Malcolm, the handsome professor who comes to her rescue when she’s attacked by her vampire-turned ex Greg on campus. I wasn’t expecting Elle to fall for Malcolm when she’s surrounded by a group of alpha men, but didn’t have a problem with their relationship…not everyone goes for the alpha, right??? The romance in this story is minimal, there’s just a little flirting and one smexy scene towards the end which I totally found awkward given the circumstances, but still enjoyed it (yes, I have issues!). Did I fail to mention that all of this crazy vampire slaying takes place in my home state of New York?! Well, the Bronx if we’re being specific. I don’t know if Ms. Collins has ever lived in NY but she does a phenomenal job with her imagery of the city, you feel like you’re right there in the Bronx walking alongside Elle!

The ongoing suspense, action and fantastic humor really makes LEGALLY UNDEAD a must read for fans of unsexy vampires and vampire slayers alike. It really stands out from all the vampire books I’ve read lately and trust me, I read a lot of vampire books! I enjoyed the whole blood sucking lawyers angle and that vampires are stripped of any romanticism, it’s a clever and fresh take on the popular mythology. Elle’s story is engaging from the start and the pace is perfect, I had a hard time putting it down but a girl needs her beauty sleep!

Margo Bond Collins adds dimension to the story with a thrilling mystery to solve, plenty of vampire slaying, multi-faceted characters and of course, some villains. There’s an unexpected twist at the end of this book that shocked me but also has me anxiously awaiting the next installment, I just hope I don’t have to wait too long! I can’t say that I had high hopes for this book when I started, I was intrigued by the description and of course the vampires, but didn’t know what to expect. That being said, I feel Ms. Collins delivered tenfold with her debut of the Vampirarchy series, I’ve found my new favorite vampire hunter in Elle Dupree!

3.5 stars. This was an easy, enjoyable story of a young woman who aligns with the local vampire hunters after her fiancée is turned. I really liked Nick, Tony, and the rest of the hunter team, as well as Malcolm. And Elle was a pretty capable hunter (almost too capable, but I'll let that pass). And that ending - what a shocker! Can't wait for the next one.

Well this one didn't do too much for me. The story and characters never really interested me. The problem with this type of book is it has to be fantastic as I have read so many like it. This one wasn't. Elle was boring and the way she goes from not knowing about vampires to a big bad ass slayer so fast just seemed a little over done.

Elle has her life all figured out and her plans are on schedule until one night when she finds a vampire sucking the life out of her fiancé Greg. That night EVERYTHING changed. That night her fiancé became a blood thirsty vampire and she became a vampire hunter - a really kick ass vampire hunter!

“It’s never easy to see an ex for the first time after you’ve broken up. Seeing an ex for the first time after he’s been turned into a bloodthirsty evil creature of the night is possibly even less easy.”

I totally LOVED Legally Undead! From the very first page, I knew this was not going to be your typical vampire story. Elle is totally awesome! She is smart, has a witty and sarcastic humor , and is just your average girl thrown into a not so average situation. She is not one to run away screaming when confronted by a vampire. Nope, all you get is a squeak as she gets down and dirty with her wood letter opener in hand, ready to inflict damage on any evil vampire that crosses her path!

"Have I mentioned how much it sucks (no pun intended) to be hunted by a vampire? Ruins your whole day"

There is so much to love about this book - humor, action, mystery and a small bit of romance. Ms. Collins has written a vampire story that is a breath of fresh air and I can't wait to read more of this highly entertaining and addictive series. If you love vampires then you NEED to read this book.....it's a MUST read!

This wasn't a bad book, but I was so thoroughly turned off by the main character within the first few chapters that I just couldn't get into it. I had to force myself to finish it because I hate hate hate not finishing a book.
The book's summary basically all happens in chapter one. It starts out with this girl walking in on her fiance essentially being murdered by a vampire. We find out shortly after that he was probably "turned" and so perhaps is not quite literally dead, but still. For all intents and purposes, the man she loved and wanted to spend her life with is gone and was brutally attacked right in front of her.
This should result in her having some freaking feelings, yeah?! But no, she's basically like "well this is a pretty sh*t situation..." and seems otherwise over it. Just moves right along into the learning about vampire hunting portion of things. (Oh, and somehow this is literally one 3-hour training session and she's suddenly a vampire killing machine. Really?) AND she has a new love interest within 2-3 weeks. It just seriously bothered me that this woman had zero mourning period for her fiance. She came across as a heartless b*tch to me for that reason. If the author didn't want to deal with getting into her feelings, she should've written them as a brief dating situation and not a soon-to-be-married couple.
Anyway, the plot was actually pretty interesting so I'm annoyed about the lack of emotional depth shown by the heroine. Even in other situations in the book, her feelings are pretty self-centered and she just reads as a flat character to me. I actually want to know how the plot turns out in the next books, but not enough to subject myself to reading them.

I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
Legally Undead is a standalone paranormal/horror novel.
Elle has everything planned with her life. She's going to graduate and get married to her lawyer fiancé Greg. Everything was perfect until she walks in on a horror scene. Her fiancé is held in the grip of a creature of nightmares, a vampire. Blood is everywhere and instead of being terrified she gets angry and runs at the vampire. Armed with nothing but a letter opener she kills her fiancé's attacker. Her perfect life is destroyed. What's worst is Greg is gone, his body is no longer there. She's now thrust into an unknown world where danger lurks in the shadows.

A fangstaking fun ride. You can't help but be drawn in with this fearless heroine. Elle is kick-ass. Elle is a normal everyday girl caught up in a deadly game. She learns how to survive. But she isn't alone. Nick, his team and her new friend Malcolm are by her side. I enjoyed the secondary characters but they didn't get a chance to really develop. Each of them still had a unique personality that was exciting to read.
The story concept wasn't unfamiliar but it was presented in a fun interesting way that made it enjoyable. I would recommend this to any fans who enjoy Buffy the Vampire Slayer type stories.
I rate this read 4 fangs.

Now that I have read Legally Undead, I have found another very good book by this author. This has a fresh twist on vampire hunters/killers. Elle is a fun, feisty, kick-ass female who, after losing her fiancé to a vampire, kills one and discovers a terrible secret about her fiancé. That secret leads to an adventure of vampire killing training, meeting Nick and his team, learning the 'truth' about vampires, and discovering that she is more than capable of rescuing her friend, Malcolm. In doing so, she bravely faces Deirdre, head vampire.

I laughed, cringed, got caught up in the story. I am not a fan of vampire stories, but I was open because I had read Waking Up Dead by Margo Bond Collins and had enjoyed her fresh twist on a murdered ghost detective. This offered a good twist on a vampire hunter and how to hunt them. Elle rocked. I enjoyed reading about her humorous POV.

I will warn that because of the killing there is violence described in this book. It is not graphic, but descriptions of the fights and killings are included and increase as the story gets nearer to the end.

There is one vampire that she didn't kill that I was totally pissed off with her for not doing so. How could she let him get away ... again?! The story is skillfully told, and just when I think I know what will happen, the author throws in an unhappy surprise followed by a very good one. This does seem to be the start of a good, suspenseful series. I'm curious where it will go from here.

EXCERPT

"Have I mentioned how much it sucks (no pun intended) to be hunted by a vampire? Ruins your whole day.

And your whole life, if you're not careful.

I'd already lost one boyfriend to the vampires, I wasn't going to lose another, even if he wasn't actually my boyfriend.

So only one question remained: how do you break up with an un-boyfriend?"

LEGALLY UNDEAD cover(1)

LEGALLY UNDEAD is not like most UF it is a mixture of fantasy and reality. Even with all the vampires Elle’s story was very real. Elle is sassy and sexy but with a smart mind but so much changed for her when she saw the vampire sucking every life out of his body. She lived a normal life with school and friends even though she hunted for vampires. Elle is poised for the adventure yet she does not rush towards danger. Elle is sassy and sexy but with a smart mind but so much changed for her when she saw the vampire sucking every life out of his body. To protect and defend him Elle reached for the letter opener and stabs the vampire in the heart however Greg was gone but was he really. He returned in the most unlikely way and offered to help Elle with the mystery at hand. Margo did an excellent job at formulating the story line with all the characters. When I thought things was slowing down the writer heats everything up and keeps you at the edge of your seat guessing what’s coming next. I love this book – Margo great job! @VictoriusPromos

I am a vampire nut, I admit it, truly. What I love about this book is Elle is like a modern day Buffy. She has to deal with vamps because her fiance Greg was attacked and turned in to a vamp.
Although thinking back I don’t really think she loved Greg the way you should if you’re going to marry someone.
So she kind of gets thrust in to this life of vampire hunting with the help of some new friends.
Nick and his team are out to protect the humans and hunt the vampires. They take Elle under their wing and teach her how to defend and how to kill. With out being those guys that think just because she is a girl she can't protect her self, I really like that.

Through her up and downs Elle not only finds her way in this new world she is in but she also become very fond of Malcolm a professor who rescued her from a vampire attack… not knowing anything about vampires or that he saved Elle from one. He is too curious for his own good an in a roundabout way finds out about vampires as well.

Some of the fight scenes and the feeding scene wow just wow you have to read/listen to understand that this is a book you need to read/listen to esp if you’re a vampire nutter like me.
Happy, sad, joyful, even had a few tears. Not like that's new I am a softy, but this book makes you feel them all.

It’s not your typical romance, suspense, rom com. It’s different and subtle and unique and witty so very witty and I want more.

I'm going to give it like 10 stars or I wish I could anyway. It was so good!!! Vampires are my favorite and the vampires in the story were just how I like them to be... Strong, creepy, blood sucking fiends that will kill humans. We still don't know everything there is to know about them so I am curious to know more.
What an incredibly good story! This one had it all, romance, action, fights, parts that had me laughing and even a sad part that made me cry.
I read the whole book in one sitting, I could not put it down. It was mostly action but the main character Elle was super funny too. With everything that was happening to her she could still be funny and I really loved her character, she was strong but also showed that she was still a girl that needed help from the guys. I loved the guys, specially Nick and Tony. Malcolm was a great character too and I am glad that he came back when he did.
I can't wait to read more, I need to know what happens next... specially to Greg. Gosh he is so bad, I wanted him to die a horrible death but I guess we have to wait a bit for his demise.
Will definitely recommend to all my friends. If you want to read a great vampire story, this is the one for you. No wimpy vampires here.

Margo Bond Collin is a great writer, with the wonderful ability to make any story believable; even a vampire urban fantasy. From the very first pages, when her heroine, Elle, steps into her apartment to find a blood-sucking fiend, the story picks up speed to twist and turn repeatedly until the explosive conclusion leaves the reader gasping, just as they were about to let out a sigh of relief. The characters are beautifully fleshed out, the pacing is exquisite, with the tension building up page after page, and the writing is elegant. Many authors seem prone to overwriting, but Collin's prose is just right.

A great book by an accomplished author. If you're into vampires, thrillers and/or urban fantasy, this is a great book for you. As it was summer when I read it, on a nice, sandy beach, books just can't get any better than this!

This book was quite different from the other's I have read by Margo. I am not sure that's a good thing. Her other books Waking Up Dead and Fairy, Texas were witty, funny and I could not put them down. While Legally Undead was not a badly written book, it was just different from the writing style I had come to expect and looked forward to from Margo.

I did enjoy the comradery and banter between the guys. Ugh, the ending tho!

Narration on this is 5 stars, story is 3 stars.....

This book was provided by the narrator via audiobook blast dot com for an honest review.

The narration on this is great, I enjoyed the voices given to the characters, she made the story enjoyable to listen to...even when the main character completely irritated me and made me want to stop.

The story though.....I have mixed feelings. It started out great and Elle is a great character....strong, adapts to the changes extremely well....and then there were a couple of instances around the 60-70% through when she pulled a TSTL and I had a hard time coming back from that. Other then that it was a well told story and while I am very curious where the story will go after that ending I'm still undecided if I will read/listen to the second book.

One minute you're planning a wedding, living a normal life. The next minute you find out vampires are real, have to kill one, and realize your fiance is now undead as well. I listened to the audiobook version, and it was so much fun! Our main character ended up a bad ass vampire hunter. The best scene in the book was when she busted into the door covered in blood, and holding a vampire head! I really liked that although she was slashing vampire heads and such, that her emotions felt real. When she deals with her ex-boyfriend throughout the story, she still has normal feelings about him. The ending was absolutely perfect. I had that satisfied feeling, but just enough information was given to make me want the next book right now! I really enjoyed this audiobook, and I hope the next one is released soon!

I’m not always a fan of books about vampires but I did enjoy this one. Vampires in this book are not the good guys. They are and do exactly what we were used to.
What I liked the most in this story was Elle. She’s one kickass heroine. She’s wity, strong, capable and determined. Most people in her position would curl up in a corner but she doesn’t. She decides to fight.
Legally undead is a fun, well-written and easy to read. I’m curious to see what will happen next.

Exciting

The story caught my interest by page one. I was so enthralled by the story I still up way too late and was a zombie at work. But it was worth it.

Just when you think the good guys are winning, boom the bad guys strike a win. Really looking forward to the next story.

This book is not your conventional vampire story. It has humor and drama and you could almost believe it could be true. I enjoyed it very much and can't wait for the next in the series.
