2. Read. Read everything you can. Read writers you know are infinitely better than you. When musicians are learning to play music, it helps them to tap their foot to the b

Donna Everhart
Donna Everhart is on page 100 of 296 of My Autobiography of Carson McCullers: This is another book that I didn't know much about - I grabbed it because it was about Carson McCullers. It's an exploration of the writer's life as a closeted lesbian, compared to the life of McCullers as the same.

The Last Language by Jennifer duBois
"I read The Last Language in one fevered session, completely in the grip of the dizzying, queasy moral maze Jennifer duBois has created here. The narrow perspective is such a clever way to tell this story because it so closely parallels Angela’s facil" Read more of this review »

What a gut-punch of a debut!
I had the pleasure of hearing Packert Burke talk about this novel (saying it was for fans of Joni Mitchell and spite), and was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC.

“Revenge isn’t real. You can’t buy coffee with it. It won’t warm your bed at night. And killing only leads to more killing.”
James Wade, All Things Left Wild

“The gun was heavy in Randall’s hand, as it should be in any hand, and heavy with the weight of decision and consequence and the destruction to come. It was, he thought, a machine constructed to kill and spill the blood of nations and become a commodity for the powerful, and another tool with which to control the weak and later the same tool that would make the weak believe they have power when in truth they have none. Only a gun, heavy in their hand.”
James Wade, All Things Left Wild

“In fact, I think it’s usually those who least deserve something, good or bad, that end up finding it on their doorstep.”
James Wade, Beasts of the Earth
