TRACE OF DOUBT by DiAnn Mills is an action-packed, fast paced Christian romantic suspense. The unique heroine is an ex-con looking to start over with an FBI undercover agent determined to recover embezzled money he believes she has hidden for fifteen years. This is a standalone novel.

Shelby Pearce has been paroled from prison after serving fifteen years for shooting her brother-in-law to death. She is looking for peace and a fresh start in a small Texas town to sell her custom-made jewelry.

FBI Special Agent Denton McClure worked the Pearce case from the beginning not to prove Shelby’s guilt of murder, but to discover the five hundred thousand dollars embezzled from her brother-in-law’s nonprofit account. Undercover in the same town as Shelby, he is determined to find the missing money and finally crack the case that has eluded conclusion for years.

Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs and as Denton works to discover why, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Will Shelby and Denton be able to discover the who and why before they are able to silence Shelby forever?

Shelby is a unique heroine in many ways. While in prison Shelby claimed her Christian faith and a lot of her story is trying to live her faith even with the hate of some and the disbelief of others for her crime. While Denton does not believe, Shelby tries to share her faith with him. The romance is slow to build due of the lack of trust which is realistic and there are no sex scenes. The secondary characters in the small town are fully fleshed and believable, but the criminals seem two-dimensional to me. The suspense plot was intriguing and interesting in the first part of the book, but then it went into more of an action movie over-the-top less realistic climax and conclusion.

This is a Christian romantic suspense with plenty of Christian faith, redemption and forgiveness intertwined with an action-packed suspense plot.

Characters: Shelby had to be my favorite character in this book. I enjoyed seeing her adapt to life outside of prison. She was a flawed but strong character. I think I would've been more invested in Denton if he'd had more scenes from his perspective, but he was more of a supporting main character.

Language: Clean.

Moral: The most prominent moral in this book was basically 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (KJV) This was shown through both Shelby's and Denton's lives. I do wish Shelby's lies had been shown to be wrong a little more.

Plot: Trace of Doubt definitely had plenty of tense moments and action scenes to keep my attention. The villain's motives were a little ... interesting ... but weirder things have happened in real life.

Romance: Clean. Maybe a kiss? I'm not a big fan of romances where there's a big difference in ages between the main characters ... probably didn't help that Denton was described as having prematurely white hair either :)

Writing: I struggled with the dialogue. It seemed stiff and just not the way people talk. But outside of the dialogue, I enjoyed the writing style.

Overall: Trace of Doubt was an exciting book, and I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense.

“This is beginnin’ to sound like a movie where I can’t predict the endin’”
A dark story of secrets and manipulation. Ms. Mills is a master of intricate storylines and crafts an evil and seriously dangerous mastermind.
“What kind of circumstances mold us into stronger people, the easy path or the challenges?”
After serving 15 years for murder, Shelby Pearce is trying to make a fresh start, when she receives several threats. A pall hangs over her and she is so grateful when she meets Christians who befriend her. It remains to be seen whether the hardened criminal is inside or outside of prison.
Shelby is a new creature in Christ and only wants to protect those she loves. “ ‘Oh Lord, you have established my heart and know everything about me!’ Trusting Him superseded everything else.”
I was excited to learn that Shelby crafted her own jewelry because I also make jewelry. And we order from the same place! I respected her resourcefulness in marketing her designs. It seemed the perfect therapy for her.
Denton, her neighbor, has a hidden past and it is about to collide with Shelby’s. He had a Christian upbringing but has let circumstances cloud his judgment. Fortunately, there is redemption and a stronger faith in store for both of them.
Intense and realistic with a fresh perspective, this book was an exciting glimpse into a devious mind.

I actually listened to the audiobook, TRACES OF DOUBT by Samantha Weisman, but that book is not on Goodreads 😣 That book is the true story of a man in prison for murder, and a journalist who is looking into his case / conviction. Narrated by the author (the said journalist), it is an interesting book.

Speechless. My flabber has been gasted. I don't think my pulse is back to normal and my blood pressure may be permanently set to high. What an emotional, edge-of-your-seat, whiplash inducing read!!!!

I connected with Shelby right from the first page. Life in prison has toughened her but it also led her to Jesus and she's planning on making a fresh start with the help of some generous strangers. Christians she has never met, but who believe in her ability to build a different kind of life in their small town community. Mind you, there are naysayers as well -- narrow-minded folks who'd like Shelby to settle somewhere else.

So there's this edge to her arrival right from the very start, but it's even more complicated than that. A man posing as a friend is really spying on her and someone is getting more and more aggressive in their attempts to run her out of town. When things escalate, Shelby's forced to face her past and the danger it presents to her future. And just when I thought I was piecing it all together, Mills makes some drastic plot U-turns that kept my head spinning and my heart pounding right to the very end.

So many scrumptious layers in characterization -- with both Shelby and Denton. Just when I thought I knew it all, the author would hit me with another gasp out loud zinger. I haven't felt this discombobulated over a suspense since I read Terri Blackstock's If I Run series! (Except without the cliffhanger ending! Phew!)

The romance is slow-burn believable. From wary adversaries to reluctant collaborators and then things really get interesting. :-)

So thankful that a reading buddy told me I needed to push Trace of Doubt waaaayyyy to the top of my teetering TBR pile! She was so right! Definitely a not to be missed suspense.

I listened to the audible edition expertly narrated by Tara Langella. She kept me riveted right to the very last second!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Having read the author's previous book, Airborne, I looked forward to reading Trace of Doubt. It did not disappoint. Read on and see my thoughts on this suspenseful story.
Trace of Doubt tells the story of Shelby Pearce. Shelby served fifteen years in prison for the alleged killing of her brother-in-law and the embezzlement of funds slated for charity. She is now out on parole and trying to get her life back on track. However, someone wants her gone permanently and will stop at nothing to achieve that goal.

Meanwhile, the FBI’s interest in the embezzled funds placed her in the crosshairs of Agent Denton McClure. He spent the past fifteen years trying to determine the location of the funds. Now that she is free, he hopes she would lead him to where she hid the money. However, the more time he spends in her company, the more he questioned the validity of her fifteen-year-old confession.

Written from the POVs of Shelby and Denton, Trace of Doubt delivered a tale steeped in danger, mystery, and suspense. The story pulled me in and proved difficult to put down. Let’s just say I have some sleep to catch upon. Now, this is not your typical romantic suspense. The thing that sets apart is the heroine’s strong Christian faith. The same faith which got her through the most difficult of times, and what she now relies on as she navigates this dangerous terrain and seeks to close this chapter of her life once and for all.

The secondary characters behaved the way one would expect in a situation such as this. There is the set who looked beyond Shelby’s past and embraced, then there were thee one who wanted to run her out of the town. It was easy to figure out what actually transpired fifteen years ago and the identity of the true villain.

I had a great time with the story, however there were a few things that bothered me. Some of which I will not mention for fear of spoilers. The issues I had were:

Denton was working undercover, yet he used his real name. This I found strange, especially knowing his affiliation with the case fifteen years ago, which would make him easily identifiable by all who were involved in the case.

The ending for me was anti-climatic after such a suspenseful and dangerous journey.

Overall, Trace of Doubt was an enjoyable story. A suitable read for fans of Christian/faith based romance. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

This was a tantalizing suspense novel that kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. I have never read anything by this author before and will definitely keep her on my reading radar. There were definitely characters in this book that I really enjoyed and there were some in here that I despised! If you enjoy reading suspense novels, check it out!

My husband and I could hardly stop listening to this audiobook! The story grabbed us and wouldn’t let go. The narrator wasn’t my favorite but I got over it.I just felt like her voice sounded a little too formal. She did the voices well. No cussing that I can remember There are no sex scenes but sex is alluded to when the main character was in prison. All that was said was,’the guard forced himself on me” or “Tried to force himself on me”. I believe it was mentioned like this twice.
The story has lots of twists and turns so, f you like mystery/suspense types of books, I think you’ll like this one. I know I look forward to more books by this author.

"I despised the title of victim as much as I hated ex-con. . . . I'd been easy prey once. Never again."

Arriving in the small town of Valleysburg, Texas after spending nearly half of her life in prison for murdering her brother-in-law, Shelby Pearce wore no rose-colored glasses, she knew it would be difficult to start over. She just hadn't counted on someone wanting her new life to end before it even began. In spite of the generosity of a few; after all, she did have a lovely place to live and a job, Shelby couldn't help but continue to watch over her shoulder for the person or persons who clearly were planning her demise. And what was up with her closest neighbor, Denton McClure, was he just being neighborly or did ulterior motives lurk underneath that nice-guy persona?

F. B. I. Special Agent Denton McClure's presence in Valleysburg was no accident. He was convinced that Shelby Pearce not only took the life of her sister's husband, but absconded with the thousands of dollars in the case that remained unaccounted for. Shocked at the poise and humility emanating from the very lovely grown-up version of the criminal he remembered from his rookie days, Denton found himself questioning a lot of things about the case. Clearly there was more to the story, and Shelby knew it.

Bravo! "Trace of Doubt" is quite an intriguing story; boasting multiple twists, turns, knots and loops from the very beginning until the very end. In addition to the suspense, there's also an impressive amount of inspirational depth, tracing the transformation of one who had everything to lose and nothing to gain, into a woman whose simplistic faith stands firm against all odds, even as the most predictable outcome could very well demand the ultimate sacrifice. And the icing on the cake? A very sweet romance between two very unlikely candidates.

"Why do I remember
The sins that stalk my soul?
Why can't I hold on to
Forgiveness that makes me whole?
Ashes rise to steal my breath.
I choke from drowning fear.
Help me, Lord, to cling to you
In never-ending prayer."

Trace of Doubt was a surprisingly great read! I started the book without any real expectations, and was hooked right away. I was intrigued by the main character and how she was a convicted murderer being released on parole. I don't think I've ever read a book like this.

The suspense was so good! I had my suspicions early on that things weren't as they seemed and who was after her...and, even though I guessed it, I still really enjoyed the ride!

All in all, Trace of Doubt was a gripping read that I'm sure fans of romantic suspense will enjoy. The romance is not a huge focal point, which I liked.

Thank you to DiAnn Mills and LSBBT for allowing me to read and review the exciting Trace of Doubt.

Shelby Pearce is fresh out of prison and determined to start over and create a peaceful productive life. Agent Denton McClure is just as determined to prove Shelby is not only a murderer but a thief. Their paths collide in dramatic fashion.

Shelby's story is not so straight forward, she has many surprises for us as the author gradually peels back the story of her life. She's smart, with a gritty sense of right and wrong, protective and forgiving of others, she holds herself to a higher standard. The mystery of her life unfolds in a spectacular ending with a satisfying resolution.

Trace of Doubt is a lightning-paced romantic drama filled with with page-turning twists and unexpected surprises. Mills takes us from small town Texas to the glittering underworld of Miami. The crisp writing is engaging and entertaining. I found myself cheering for Shelby from the opening pages. Mills has created a cast of realistic characters who make this thriller a gripping ride.

The book contains a moderate level of violence and has an overlay of Christian themes. I found it an entertaining read and would happily recommend it to readers who enjoy mystery/thrillers and romance.

"Trace of Doubt" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. Denton believes Shelby's guilty of theft but he's never been able to prove it. When she's released from prison, though, he realizes that this smart, brave, self-sacrificing woman didn't steal the money. He's been putting the blame for a lot of things on the wrong person. Shelby would do anything for her family, especially her older, perfect sister. She's blind to the manipulation that Denton soon begins to suspect.

The main characters were caring, engaging, and reacted realistically to events. I found it believable that Shelby was initially fooled even though she's a smart woman, but then she still underestimated just how clever that person was even though she saw the evidence firsthand. After getting to know each other, Shelby and Denton grew into friends and then to care more deeply for each other. They used their unique skills to gather information to stop the person targeting Shelby. The suspense was from the increasing physical danger to Shelby.

The Christian element was mainly some questioning by Denton about how Shelby could trust God when He let so many bad things happen to her. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful novel.

Mills really captured the troubles a person has when newly released from prison. The difficulties a parolee experiences in reentering society are daunting. I admired the people who gave her a chance and was totally disappointed with the people who showed such prejudice, holding her past over her, especially the church people. The message about judging was clear and not subtle at all.

The characters Mills crafted were a bit puzzling to me. I bordered on disbelief about how dedicated Shelby was to her sister. Shelby developed a stronger character while in prison yet remained clueless in evaluating her sister. I found it interesting that, even in the end, the behavior of Shelby's sister remained a mystery to her. (4949/5045) Shelby's thoughts did not give me confidence that we readers were supposed to understand the behavior either. Family loyalty would be a good topic for discussion at a reading group, as would questions about childhood influences on adult behavior.

The resolution to the complex plot was quick and felt a little unreasonable, the cavalry coming over the hill to the rescue kind of ending. I thought Shelby was crafted to be a strong person and I would have preferred her having an active part in the final action.

This mystery has lots of suspense woven around family relationships. It includes a very strong Christian faith message. Even though I felt there were some character and plot defects in the novel, I do like Mills' writing and will be looking for her next book.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This story intrigued me from the beginning. The hero Shelby, spent fifteen years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, in order to protect her pregnant sister. Yet Shelby’s troubles are far from over, and now, someone wants her dead.

I loved the main characters because they were unique, realistic and likable, flaws and all. This story offers fast-paced suspense, and even after I stopped reading, I kept thinking about it. It offers the message that healing is possible and broken people can learn to love again.

For readers who like Christian fiction with a focus on conversion and testimony, they will find all of that in this book and more. The romance and suspense have equal billing, and I enjoy reading romantic suspense, especially a story that is about the romance, not sex. I’m not a prude and certainly have nothing against physical intimacy, I just prefer not to have it described in graphic detail. The romance in A Trace of Doubt is sweet and endearing.

Shelby has reformed while in prison and turned her life over to Jesus, and a good bit of the subplot revolves around her faith and testimony, and it was nice to see the gentle way she shared her faith with Denton. The relationship that develops between her and Denton is well played out, and it was a pleasure to see how that happened slowly, with him respecting her hesitancy to enter into anything permanent. It is a truly good man who will have that kind of respect and hold back on pushing for a commitment until the other person is ready. The “will they – won’t they” back and forth in the story is also a realistic aspect of a character like Shelby who never had an opportunity to know a man who could care for her like that. One doesn’t meet good men in prison.

In addition to Denton, Shelby has Edie, the woman who rents Shelby a cabin, on her side, as well as Amy-Jo, who owns the bakery/cafe where Shelby will work in Valleysburg. Shelby is determined to put the past behind her and start living a new life with the help of the new friends in the new town. There are others, too. The pastor of the church. The Sherriff, and Shelby’s parole officer who is presented against stereotype, which I appreciated. He is kind and helpful, as are those other people.

Amy-Jo is a standout supporting player for me, making me smile when first meeting her. She’s a fun-loving person who doesn’t care what anyone thinks about the way she dresses or what she does with her hair or how much makeup she wears. She’s also the kind of strong woman that anyone would want in their corner when facing danger.

In the beginning of the story, I came across a couple of things that jarred just a bit. They seemed odd in the plotting, and I hoped they were not little mistakes. When I got to the explanations of those oddities, I had to smile at the deft way Mills handled the dropping of the puzzle pieces and the later revelations. One of the points that I won’t detail here because I don’t want to give anything away, is actually very important for the turnaround in Denton as he starts to view Shelby and what happened 15 years ago in a totally different light.

That was a perfect example of why things don’t have to always be explained upfront, leaving questions that keep a reader engaged.

Trace of Doubt was an amazing suspense novel. As a lover of the genre, I have seen about everything one can do within this genre. So when I started this book I was unsure what to expect.
This book brought a new light, we follow this woman who is getting out of jail for a crime she confessed guilty to. She tries to start a new life. However unfortunately, someone does not want her to start over.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the relationship Shelby has with God. Her come to Jesus moment was amazing and inspirational to read.
The hidden villain of the story was a shock. I had a hunch but did not think it was the person it was.
This book is filled with revenge and hatred and discrimination. But, it is also filled with love and hope and second chances. Highly recommend to anyone who loves this genre or is looking to start reading in this genre.
I am a huge fan of Diann Mills writing and think this was one of her best books she has written so far.

As a huge fan of DiAnn Mills, I was so excited to hold her newest novel, Trace of Doubt, in my hands as I knew it would be an exceptional read.

From the opening page, I was drawn in and captivated by the suspense, faith, and love throughout the book until the final sentence. It was a book that once you start reading it you will find it very hard to put down.

The heroine of the story is Shelby Pearce, a recently released ex-con who served 15 years for a crime she confessed to committing but she didn't commit. She has been offered a place to stay and a job in Valleysburg, a town in Texas. The hero is Denton McClure, an FBI Special Agent who is working undercover. His job is to try to locate the money that went missing after Shelby supposedly murdered her brother-in-law. He believes Shelby knows where the money is.
I always love the characters that Ms. Mills creates as they always become so real to me. She didn't disappoint me with Shelby and Denton. They are both strong characters with a purpose. I also really like the character of Edie, Shelby's landlord as she stood her ground against her brother, a local deputy who didn't want Shelby in town. Edie believed in Shelby and gave her the benefit of the doubt.

In a nutshell, Shelby Pearce has just been released from prison after serving 15 years for killing her brother-in-law. While she didn't kill him she stands firm on her confession obviously covering for the person she believes did the crime. At the time of the murder, $500,000.00 went missing leaving Shelby the number one suspect. This crime she adamantly claims she did not do.

Shelby's family disowned her so when she is released she is offered a cabin to live in and a job at a local bakery so she will be compliant with her probation officer. Denton, working undercover, is living in the cabin next to Shelby's so he can keep surveillance on Shelby.

This story has a fast pace taking the reader on an edge-of-your-seat roller-coaster ride into a world of nail-biting suspense and sweet romance. I also loved the Christian thread throughout the book.

I loved this book and would highly suggest it to anyone who loves a clean fast-paced suspense novel.

On a 5-Star scale = 5 Stars!!!

TRACE OF DOUBT
DiAnn Mills

Fifteen years ago Shelby confessed to killing her brother-in-law for which she was sentenced to prison. At the same time, half of a million dollars went missing from the brother-in-laws' nonprofit but was never found. Shelby was a bit of a wild child and so it was easy to envision this behavior from her. Her sister was a vision of loveliness and was pg with her first child.

Now, having found God she is ready to turn her life around and welcomes the chance of parole to a small Texas town. She is a jewelry maker and has a business plan, but someone doesn't want her there and life begins to turn upside down. Meanwhile, the FBI is still interested in the 500K and sends in a UC agent to get the scoop. But Special Agent Denton McClure is no longer a rookie fresh and he is hot on the trail to solve this crime... and fall in love with Shelby.

Fairly suspenseful, quite enjoyable, and certainly a fast pace action-packed story. The plot is well thought out and flows like silk. Go for it if you think it sounds interesting.

4 stars

Happy Reading!

“You asked about Aaron,” Isaac said. “He made it through surgery and is holding his own. Due to Shelby’s quick thinking, she kept him from bleeding out.”

Diann Mills autographed my Trace of Doubt book with “expect an adventure.”

She was right. It did not take long for me to become absorbed in this latest book by Diann Mills. The adventure soon began and it became super, super difficult for me to put this book down. Trace of Doubt is the fourth book I have read by Diann. What I loved about this book and all of Diann’s books is her unique way of writing short chapters that readily speed the stories along. She certainly has a way of bringing depth to each of the characters in this story from an ex-con, to a down-and-out FBI agent, to small-town characters, to even close family members.

Trace of Doubt is more faith-centered than the other Diann Mills books I have read. The main character of Shelby in this book has the deepest faith of all the characters. It is that conviction of knowing God that gets her through all the situations in this book from starting over to getting shot at to the final heartrending ending. She even trusts her faith even more during the most heightened moments of danger in this story.  What's even better about this story is that it shows a woman can be extremely resilient and strong with a deep faith.

If you love, fast-paced adventure Trace of Doubt will keep you on the edge of your seat and engrossed until the very end. This book was an unputdownable satisfying weekend read for me. This plot is amazing.  Thank you, Diann, for promising an adventure and letting your well-crafted story that took me along a journey I did not see coming.

Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills is a chase for what really happened. After Shelby Pearce was released from prison for killing her brother-in-law, readers are invited to watch her try to work her way back into society. Death threats and shots at her are the norm in suspense novels. The story does have a realistic look at the prejudice that is shown to ex-cons. While the story progressed, I had a good idea of what really occurred fifteen year ago. But then again, I am pretty good at figuring out most suspense novels even though the authors thinks they put enough red herrings in place to fool the reader. The suspense and the concept of the novel was well-written. There is a touch of romance to the plot too. Not too much. A little. A little creepy at times especially with the way that Mills described the hero when he first came onto the page. I couldn’t get the image of him and young 33 year old heroine out of my head. The climactic moment was nicely handled. I really liked how Mills crafted the last twenty percent of the novel. Overall, Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills is a story that reached a wonderful ending. If you enjoyed this novel, I suggest trying Center of Gravity and Sister Dear by Laura McNeil. Same type of story. Well handled.

I received a complimentary copy of Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills from Tyndale Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

DiAnn Mills has done it again. She never disappoints her readers. Trace of Doubt is filled with one suspenseful twist after another. Concern for an ex-con, Shelby Pearce’s safety, kept me turning the page. My emotions merged with Shelby’s as I tried to help her get through the disappointments and dangers she faced.
Shelby Pearce gets parole after serving fifteen years for confessing she’d killed her brother-in-law. She tries to get re-established in a small town in Texas but faces public scrutiny. The FBI concluded she’d embezzled five hundred thousand dollars, but no one had ever found the money. FBI Agent Denton McClure is dead-set on proving Shelby hid the money. He wants to locate the cash and prove he was right after keeping track of her since her arrest years ago.
Denton never expects to develop feelings for Shelby, as traces of doubt have him questioning her actual guilt. Her demeanor, actions, attitude, and relationship with Christ have him scratching his head. He becomes determined to find the truth regardless of his feelings.

A thrilling story of faith, sacrifice, forgiveness, friendship and love, Trace of Doubt kept me up all night trying to follow the heart-pounding twists and turns in the life of Shelby Pearce after her release from prison. At first, I tried to guess what was going to happen next but when I found myself wrong several times, I decided to just enjoy and let DiAnn Mills take me for a literary ride. Starting with the dramatic prologue all the way to the satisfactory conclusion in the epilogue, this book had me enthralled.

I started this book without reading anything about it. I liked the author, the book cover was intriguing, so I jumped in. Oh, I was pleasantly surprised at how this story started. Trace of Doubt is written in first person, from the main characters Shelby and her neighbor, Denton, which gives it an intimate feel. Therefore, enjoyed the small-town setting, the splash of romance, and the genuine friendship Shelby had with Edie and Amy Jo, who runs the local bakery-café. The faith message is natural and not preachy.

Shelby is a brave young lady that doesn’t want any trouble with anyone in this small-town community. She is willing to work hard and let the locals get to know her, so they see how she is changed. But Edie’s brother, who just so happens to be a policeman, doesn’t like the fact that his sister is helping an x-con. He doesn’t care how much time she spent in jail or that she met Jesus and changed. He felt there was nothing good in her.

I loved how the story takes a huge twist and things aren’t what I thought they were going to be. I also liked how the author shows how it’s hard to love the unlovable. I could imagine what it would have been like to hang around with Paul (at the time he was killing Christians) and then hang out with him after becoming a Christian. How could the disciples and others believe this guy? He met Jesus and changed? Right! But that’s what it was like for Shelby. She was truly changed from the inside out.

DiAnn Mills hits it out of the park with just the right blend of mystery, suspense, redemption, healing, and romance. This is a thought-provoking read I could not put down. I highly recommend it for your next book club pick. The story is rich and the characterization deep. There is so much to talk about.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Wow! Just Wow! I love every page of this book. Every book I read of DiAnn Mills just gets better and better. Shelby is out of jail after serving 15 years for confessing to pulling the trigger and killing her brother in law. But someone doesn’t like her out in the world and they are trying to silence her. But FBI Special Agent Denton is determined to find who is behind the attacks. Will he find the guilty one before they succeed in taking out Shelby for good?

Shelby was such a lovable character, she quickly stole my heart. I felt so bad for her because she was trying so hard to make a new life for herself in the small town of Valleysburg. She has no place else to go because her family disowned her. Denton had to grow on me, but I soon trusted that he has Shelby’s best interest at heart. Mills does a fantastic job creating characters, showing their personality as well as as their good traits as well as faults with the not so likeable characters. Trace of Doubt is a fast pace, nails biting, edge of your seat suspense thriller that I didn’t want to put down, though there were times I had to for a bit. There is so much tension throughout this book, at times I had to stop just to grasp what I had read. There were many times I went back and re-read paragraphs or pages. This story has so much more than what I mentioned, but you will need to read the book to find out what’s there. The doubts, lies, deception along with finding the truth with lots of faith running through the story will sure capture your attention fast, just as it did mine. I can’t say enough good things about DiAnn Mills and this amazing story. I will definitely be keeping my copy of Trace of Doubt to read again. If you enjoy a really amazing suspense that will knock you off your feet, you will love this latest book from DiAnn Mills.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Here’s a new suspense filled story from DiAnn Mills. I’ve read a few of her other titles, and this one succeeded my expectations. Shelby Pearce has spent 15 years in prison after confessing to the murder of her brother-in-law, and now, having survived life in prison, and finished her sentence, she begins a new journey trying to survive on the outside. Denton McClure was the federal agent assigned to her case those years ago, but the mystery, for him, continued to linger, where did Shelby stash the embezzled money? He sets himself up undercover living nearby to befriend her and gain the information.

Shelby’s introduction to her new town is mixed with animosity and friendship. Her and Denton don’t hit it off, but that resolves (almost a little quickly). But as someone is orchestrating events to endanger and manipulate her, it becomes clear that she doesn’t have the money, and it seems that someone else will do almost anything to find it. The plot shifts and changes, keeping you in suspense. I enjoyed shelby and Denton, and the portrayal of their honest struggles. You see them grow in humility, loyalty and trust. If you love Christian suspense, you’ll find a great read here!

This novel centered around Shelby Pearce. She was recently released from prison after serving time after confessing to the crime of murder. Now being free, she wants to start her life anew. We also have Agent Denton McClure who believes Shelby may or may not have committed just a bit more than murder.

This story held quite a few twists, which I love when a story keeps me on my toes. I found Shelby to be quite intuitive and extremely forgiving. I don't know how I would be able to handle being estranged from my family, even if the reason occurred due to my own actions. Maybe I'm a bit sensitive because Shelby was such a likable character. I wanted her life to be smooth sailing upon her release, but predators and roadblocks tried to get in the way of her finding the answers she sought. She does however find her own circle of friends who trust and believe in her. I also liked that the romance between Shelby and Denton was able to grow organically.

"Old friends are like gold nuggets-they increase their value with time."

While this mystery was also a thriller, it had a few other elements like romance, abuse, religion, violence, and abuse. This will probably show that I have an affinity towards True Crime TV and all things Dexter. But, I LOVED the scene with Jess, Marissa, Shelby, and the finger. You'll have to read it. It was smartly done and a bit cheeky.

Just when I caught my breath after one twist, Mills hit me with another. DiAnn Mills is quickly becoming one of my favorite Texas Authors. She has a way of pulling you into the character's psyche until you become one with them. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

This was interesting one… it took me a while to get into it, but once I did…

Let me put this way. I started reading, and after a few chapters I was like, ‘I love the premise, this is such a cool idea, but I’m struggling to connect with the story…’ and then, the next thing I knew, it was an hour later and I’d knocked off another 20 chapters! 😂 Needless to say, I got sucked in hard!

And it was a whirlwind! Such a different and unique story. Starting with an MC being released from prison after a 15 years sentence is definitely a different take to anything I’ve read before. And while DiAnn usually falls very much under the romantic suspense banner, this one turns out to be edging closer to a psychological thriller! There’s is still some romance, but only a little. The main drive of the story is why someone is trying to kill our MC… and what really happened all those years earlier when she confessed to the murder of her brother-in-law.

If you don’t usually read thrillers, and you’d like to try one, but you’re a bit apprehensive of the creep factor, this might be a good place to start because it’s a little ‘softer’ (and a little less scary) than your usual thriller, but still has all the action. Kind of like it wants to be a thriller but still has a touch of that romantic suspense vibe about it to soften it. Once I got past the slow start, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Trace of Doubt

Back of the Book: “Fifteen years ago, Shelby Pearce confessed to murdering her brother-in-law and was sent to prison. Now she’s out on parole and looking for a fresh start in the small town of Valleysburg, Texas. But starting over won’t be easy for an ex-con.
FBI Special Agent Denton McClure was a rookie fresh out of Quantico when he was first assigned the Pearce case. He’s always believed Shelby embezzled five hundred thousand dollars from her brother-in-law’s account. So, he’s going undercover to befriend Shelby, track down the missing money, and finally crack this case.
But as Denton gets closer to Shelby, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs. It’s up to Denton to stop them before they silence Shelby—and the truth—forever.”
My Thoughts: Oh, the suspense! But was it good suspense? From the beginning, I had a hard time seeing Shelby as a murderer. As the story evolves, I didn’t understand why people she had never met were so trusting and invested in her. It was a bit strange to me. These things set the story up to work however and the mystery of who Shelby was covering for made the story more interesting. The ending was a bit theatrical and dramatic. I wasn’t imagining anything so grand. Did I like it? Yes- no. I liked the middle. The beginning was too confusing. Shelby was good but also a cold blood killer? The ending was too over the top for me. Ultimately, I stayed up far past my bedtime to read it so it was interesting and intriguing.
Inspiring Thoughts: “’ He’s like Good Housekeeping.’ ‘What?’ ‘He has years of issues.’” – This just made me laugh.
“I was overthinking, overreacting, not weighing the facts, and leaving God out of the picture.”
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review shared here.

Gosh darn it, I love DiAnn Mills! Her work never fails to entertain and satisfy. Trace of Doubt is no exception. Shelby Pearce is finally a parolee. After spending fifteen years in prison, she’s ready to begin a new life, in a new town, with a new faith. Jesus moved while she was behind bars, and Shelby knows He’ll be right by her side as she starts her next journey. She prays it will be peaceful…but the threats come almost as soon as she enters Valleysburg. Someone wants her dead. But Shelby Pearce is a hard person to kill; prison taught her a few things.

Denton McClure has believed in Shelby’s guilt since he was assigned to her case fifteen years ago. Now that she is out, he is determined to learn what she is hiding. Maybe he will have to lie to her, but there was no way she had turned her life around. She was a murderer…and a thief, too, in his book. Denton seeks closure, and the only way he will get it is to get her to confess.

But as time moves forward, he grows to know Shelby Pearce for who she really is. Time moves forward, and the threats increase at the same pace. She claims a piece of his heart—whether he wants her to or not—and he cannot accept anything happening to her. Not on his watch. He and Shelby will learn the identity of the villain, and they have to do it before it is too late.

Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills is exciting. Filled with edge-of-your-seat moments, I flew through this book as if I were aboard a rocket to the moon. I had to know what happened next, because Mills does a very good job of surprising her readers. Mills’ characters are multi-faceted. That is something I appreciate so much about her work, because characters grow—especially Denton, which thrilled me. So many romantic suspense novels focus on the female character. The man is almost a “perfect” person, with few faults. Denton, however…goodness, he can have my heart any day!

I did not only enjoy Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills for the romance or the suspense, though both are wonderful! Mills portrays the goodness of God so clearly, and it floods my heart with such warmth. I have a smile on my face even thinking about it. Mills has such a way with words, and I cannot wait to read her next novel. I will not be able to click “pre-purchase” fast enough.

I am closing this review with a poem from Trace of Doubt. I think it is permanently tattooed on my heart—in the best way possible.

Why can’t I hold on to the
Forgiveness that makes me whole?
Ashes rise to steal my breath.
I choke from drowning fear.
Help me, Lord, to cling to You
In never-ending prayer.
