Review

...a group of animal-rights activists discovers human remains on the grounds of a drug company's research facility--thus entangling Detective Superintendent Dalziel in a slippery mystery, not to mention a romance with a woman who's his equal in appetite and ingenuity. -- Entertainment Weekly

Hill is one of the best writers in this genre, and this is one of his best. A very complex plot, engrossing in of itself (ending though, a little hokey) plus interesting historical depiction of World War One. If one is familiar with 'War Pigs' by Black Sabbath, one will see parallels with a running motif found in this book

Reginald Hill is a well-regarded British mystery writer. Besides his stand-alone novels he is also well known for the series named after the two police investigators Dalziel (pronounced DEE-ELL) and Pascoe. The former is the senior police superintendent known for his earthy, brusque and usually rude style, while the latter is a chief inspector who is well educated, well mannered and urbane. They form an unusual and effective partnership. This is the second book I've read in the D&P series, the first being On Beulah Height which was outstanding and to which I gave a 5-star rating. The Wood Beyond was not quite up to that level but was still an interesting read. Reginald Hill is known for his superior and intricate plots and TWB was no exception. It contains two interwoven stories, one involving the attacks by an animal rights group against laboratories using animals in their research. The second thread is a historical mystery involving the court martial and execution of Pascoe's grandfather during the Great War. The solution of these two interrelated mysteries is handled with skill and involve a cast of interesting characters. The amusing interactions between Dalziel and his subordinates as well as his new-found love interest (who is also a person of interest in the police case) make for an interesting read. Pascoe's astute wife Ellie continues to play an active role in solving the cases. I also found of interest the realistic depictions of life in the trenches of WWI and the ordeals of the troops involved. TWB is a solid, well crafted mystery that I rated 3.5 rounded up to 4-star.

A combination of a current crime involving animal rights, medical research and death mixed with a shattering indictment of The Great War and Pascoe's discoveries about his ancestors. taut complex current crime story.
the usual chemistry of the gross overbearing Dalziel, his sensitive second in command Pascoe, Edgar Wield, and a rich mix of Yorkshire characters
Ideally you should start with the first D&P (a clubbable woman) and work your way up, but who of us do so? Some acquaintance with the usual cast of characters might help, but it's also a fine stand-alone novel. Hill has gotten better over time but then he started from a high point
The only other author of crime fiction currently writing with whom I'd compare Hill is Ian Rankin

This novel has two primary story lines. One revolves around events during World War I, and the other is set in 1990's Yorkshire, England at a pharmaceuticals company. The author skillfully weaves the two plot lines together into an ending that sees all loose ends tied up and all crimes solved. In this story, we see a more human side of Dalziel, and we learn something about Pascoe's anmcestry. Sergeant Wield, as always, covers the details in his usual competent manner, and a new female member of the team of detectives is introduced. At 439 pages, the book is longer than Hill's usual fare, but it kept me reading -- even through the verbatim diary entries of some of the characters. Perhaps it is because of my interest in WWI that I remained committed to finishing this book, but I researched the Battle of Passchendaele and was astounded to see the degree of destruction that resulted from it. The village looked flatter and more utterly destroyed than Hiroshima after the bomb. All-in-all, I liked the book, and I award it 4 stars. Hill was a very skilled writer, and this book, even though written in the 1990's, could have taken place today.

The series should be read in order (I didn't read all of them in order, and know that they would have been much better if I had.) While I have enjoyed all of them, I really liked this one the best so far. These are well written, and interesting mysteries.

characters, plot, have depth of history and psychological appeal to the mature mind. Reginald Hiil is a page turner who sacrifices none of the equalities necessary for a fine novel

Reginald has pulled it out of the bag again. This book has the usual banter between Dalziel and Pascoe etc. which makes me laugh out loud, but in addition has some throw backs to the first world war which has made me want to research deeper into that particular war. I love this series of books and would rate them all 5, but this one, if I could, I would give it a 10 and I havent quite finished reading it yet!
