USA Today Bestseller Updated July, 2017

Welcome to the fictitious little town of Watery, Pennsylvania where the district attorney’s personal secretary, Mary Murray never planned to become a single mom or a suspect in her infant’s disappearance, but she plans to find Jena before she suffers the same fate Mary’s younger brother had when he was taken twelve years earlier.

AND

From a beta reader-I must tell you that everything I've read lately has bored me to tears...until today. Honestly, I could not put TAKEN down. I was pleasantly surprised. I felt the author captured each character's personality and conveyed them to the reader with such clarity, that they felt like real people. I was thrilled with how the book ended---Lucilla

From The Author

Years ago a small child was taken from his home not far from where I live. The child was never found. His disappearance haunted me over the years, and still does. Hopefully someday I will know what happened to that little boy.

It breaks my heart every time I hear a news report about a missing child. So I suppose the disappearance of that little boy long ago and those heart breaking news stories is what drove me to write TAKEN.

New Update From The Author-July, 2017

I finally wrote a follow up story to Taken, NEVER AGAIN

For readers of TAKEN that wanted to know what happened with certain characters after the story ended, the wait is over. I wrote a novella, NEVER AGAIN that hopefully will satisfy your curiosity. I know it did mine.

From the Inside Flap

The first snow storm of the season made driving treacherous. Red lights on emergency vehicles suddenly flashed up ahead. Flares lit up the highway. Teddy braked harder when the state trooper standing on the center line came into view. The trooper waved his arm and pointed toward the opposite lane from the accident. Teddy breathed more freely and moved on.

Evading detection was easy this time. Sliding into a ditch and needing to be rescued like that other driver would be a downright injustice after making it this far.

Top reviews from the United States

I got this when it was still free, but it would have been worth paying for.

The author wove a superlative tale of suspense; I couldn't put my Kindle Fire down until I finished reading this! It's always sad to read about stories of missing children and this was no exception. The characters were very-well defined; I felt like I knew them all. I was sitting in the sidelines, right? Watching all the events take place, not just reading a story? Right?

Such an awesome book! I will probably read it again sometime.

My book review today is on the book Taken by Debra Lee. It is a suspense book and is quite good. I enjoyed how Debra set all of her characters up as suspects, giving each one a reason for getting rid of the baby. You weren't sure to the end which one actually did it. This not really a Christian book but there is no foul language or sexual content. I did appreciate that. It is hard to find clean books.

The book opens with the abduction of three month old Jenna but then takes us back to what went on nine months ago. Mary Murray breaks up with her boyfriend on the night she was to tell him about their unborn child. He tells her he is in love with another woman so she keeps the child a secret. We then meet the characters that will eventually be suspects. Kyle is the father of the child, he has political aspiration and a mother that is heartless in her commitment to see him in office, then we meet his now wife and mother of a child born on the same day as Mary's child, Elaine. She is jealous of the time and money Kyle wants to give his daughter. Reilly is a journalist that has been in love with Mary for some time even though she hardly knows he is alive. After the birth of Jenna he becomes a part of Mary's life but is jealous of the time she spends with the baby when she could be with him. Next we have Carol, her best friend since college. Carol is also jealous of the time Mary spends with her new child, time they use to spend together. Last but not least is Ellie, the elderly neighbor who babysits Jenna. Her son has just lost a child and she feels they would be much better parents.

They go through several weeks without being able to find the child. there is little evidence but the police are ever working behind the scene with Reilly working through his informants. It is a good story and I know you will enjoy it.

Life can be difficult and we can have no way to turn. Things can look like there is no hope but we need to remember God is working behind the scenes even if we can't see it. As Christians are hope and prayers open doors for Him to work through. In Genesis, God asks Abraham, "Is anything to hard for me?" We just need to trust and not fear. Fear closes the door and can keep God from being able to work. I trust you will have an awesome week. God bless you all.

There is a good plot in here...Though I can say the story is complete, it could have been developed further. The whole thing took less than 200 pages, and the result was too simple and elementary.

There were a number of grammatical errors in the kindle edition. Also, the author seems to have an aversion for commas. I found myself repeating a lot of sentences, trying to determine where the pause should have been.

Just the same...for the very quick read format, and the good enough story: 3 stars.

I have to agree with the other reviewers of this book. The use of first and last names (Mary Marie Murray) throughout the book is a little weird and distracting. The characters are completely unbelievable and undeveloped. And some of the story lines just stop w/o being tied up.

I don't know anything about this author, but I can't believe she has children. If she does, she has the worst friends on the planet if they treated her the way Mary's friends did right after she had a baby. She was asked to find her own replacement at work, read her fried's novel, and listen to another friend's petty life stories. Her friends ALL resented her baby. It was just weird.

The plot wasn't suspenseful or mysterious. I'd skip this one.

I hate leaving negative reviews because it takes a village to get a book published--I just did not think there was a village involved here. No critique partners, no professional editing, no copy editor??? Sorry, but I got the clear impression that this manuscript was one of those first manuscripts authors kept hidden under their beds. Until self publishing came along.

The author gave me no emotion--goodness, this woman had a
Iittle brother raped and murdered and now her child is missing. Where is her inner turmoil, her terror? And how can she keep longing for the spineless Kyle? Other little things--Mary wants constant phone availability, so why no smart phone? Just a lot didn't make sense...her complete trust in Carol despite the overweening antagonism????

And what's with Reilly's dialogue, all the apostrophes in place of g's? If he's got an accent, mention it once and then let it go. Then Kelly started doing it, and my teeth gnashed even more.

The idea of a stolen baby and the cover drew me in, but the story just didn't add up, especially with characters tossed in late.
A good writing class and lessons in punctuation and spelling and point of view will help. Dinted was either supposed to be dinged or dented. And is " leant" even a word? And another teeth-gnasher was the total absence of commas after introductory clauses.

I was disheartened with this book, but hate to leave without anything positive, so let me assure you I did finish the book. There was enough there to keep me going. And the author has a good imagination. Read more suspense novels and get stronger critique partners, practice the craft of writing, and definitely hire a better editor. The next one will be better! Honest best wishes.

5.0 out of 5 stars loads of twists and turns

Mary's brother was kidnapped and killed years ago and now it seems like history is repeating itself when Mary's daughter, Jena, is taken in the middle of the night. The police think there's a good chance Mary knows the person who took her daughter, but who out of the people she knows would do such a thing and why?

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish and there were loads of unexpected twists and turns.
The book starts with Mary discovering Jena has been taken, which gives us a snippet of things to come before we go back nine months to when Mary has just discovered she is pregnant. I really liked this as it gave me the chance to find out more about the characters and think about who could have motive for taking Jena before she had even disappeared. I think this non linear way of telling the story was really good and think it worked better than if the story had just started after Jena had been taken.

It was very well written as the characters were all really well developed and as the reader you felt you understood each one and their motivations but then you were also still able to suspect each character as well.

If you like crime/thriller books be sure to give this one a try, as it leaves you guessing till the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent enough book

Although I read this in a couple of sittings I can't really say it was because I couldn't put it down, more because it was quite a short book.

It started off ok, a baby goes missing while the mum is asleep then it goes back to 9 months earlier and starts to tell the story of all the people who would feel that life would be better without baby Jena around.

While the characters start off ok I felt that there was so much more that could have been told and I never had the feeling that "A" did it, then it turns out to be "B".

In fact to be honest I worked it out fairly quickly and was quite disappointed to be right for a change!

I also felt that everything was done in quite a matter of fact way and that sometimes it seemed I was reading a story written by someone in secondary school rather than a professional writer.

The ending was quite predictable and short and again I felt that it was a bit stilted and rushed.

Overall though, it wouldnt put me off giving another book by Debra Lee a chance but I don't think they should be listed as thrillers as this certainly wasn't.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, pointless, a terrible novella.

(Possible spoiler alert)

The whole point of this book is 'her baby has been kidnapped, so let's find the baby and then find out the who dunnit element'.

Except the first third of this book is nothing but childish jealousy between two grown women, the next two thirds are a boring account of motherhood; main character gets obsessed with her baby, and main character's best friend gets more jealous and childish. The last third everything is resolved and there's even a wedding (between two characters who were not mutually attracted to one another until that very moment).

I honestly don't think an editor saw this book before it was published. It's just badly written nonsense. No suspense or anything.
