Doubletake Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

**** Chosen as the Best Mystery for 2015 by the Texas Association of Authors. ****
From best-selling author Maryann Miller comes another gripping police-procedural mystery. In Doubletake, death sneaks in the back door of the peaceful town of Twin Lakes, Texas and nothing is ever the same again.

Smart and savvy homicide detective, Barbara Hobkins, is thrust headlong into the investigation. A product of the "new direction" in law enforcement, her strength comes from a degree is psychology and an intuition that has served her well. But will that be enough when up against a sadistic killer?

Her partner, Keith Reeves, wants nothing more than to solve this case so he can have one normal night at home with his family. Despite his hope to solve the case quickly, he fights the pressure to nail somebody, any somebody, to satisfy the powers above.

The suspect, Royce Wertco, is a teenage punk; capable of the numerous petty crimes he’s been convicted of in the past, but not murder. Barbara knows this with every fiber of her being, but can she prove it?

Convinced the real killer is also responsible for a series of murders in Dallas, Hobkins tracks him to his seedy hidey-hole. There, her investigation turns into a chilling race for her life, and she almost becomes a victim of "Doubletake."

REVIEW: The Twin Lakes Police Department has just had two murders, very close together. The modus operandi is not exactly same for both, but certain observations at the scenes suggest the authorities shouldn’t rule out a single perpetrator. Both victims are female. Barbara Hobkins and her partner Keith Reeves are assigned the case. As the story progresses there is some speculation on, and disagreement about, whether there is one killer or two. It also seems that the case may mimic one from another jurisdiction. Just what kind of murderer do they have on their hands? To complicate matters, Barbara is attracted to Gene, Tom’s best friend and the principal of the high school that is peripherally associated with both cases (Tom is the widower of Barbara and Keith's first victim, and of course a prime suspect). In fact they become an item, which is definitely not a wise decision for the primary on a case. The book is well plotted and it is obvious that the author is an experienced writer. The ending is quite satisfying and surprising.

Maryann Miller, an award-winning author, has been in love with story-telling since she was a child and used to scare her sister with stories of the monsters in the cellar. Those tales were never written down. They were always whispered in the dark, and when Maryann started writing stories, they were different types entirely.

As a young child, she didn't consider that she would grow up to be a writer. She fancied herself quite the singer and thought she would someday sing in front of crowds of thousands. Alas, that proved to be more dream than reality.

At another point in her childhood, she dreamed of being an actress, but it took many years before she was brave enough to give it a try. For fifteen years she was the Theatre Directer at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts where she directed shows for some time before getting brave enough to step on stage. It appears she was more suited to acting than singing, and she has since starred in several productions at various community theatres in East Texas.

A diverse writer of columns, feature stores, short fiction, novels, screenplays and stage plays, Maryann has won numerous awards including being a semi-finalist at the Sundance Institute for her screenplay, A Question Of Honor. She has also received the Page Edwards Short Story Award and the 2015 Best Mystery award for Doubletake.

Miller lives in a small town in NE Texas with one dog, and four cats. The cats rule! She has been writing all her life and plans to die at her computer.

A very interesting murder mystery. Good characters, almost had the ending guessed, but a little twist to it as well. Good book for me!

WOW! Talk about a doubletake, the ending floored me. The story drew me in and compelled me to read more and more. Miller and Sutton's ease of introduction, yet fully characterizing each new character so quickly really added to the pace of the story adding an urgency to the feel. Truly a book that builds the tension and frustration of the leads within you as you read their tale. I liked the flaws and insecurities of the main characters being proportionate to their strengths, they were real in depiction and easy to visulize. A great read!

Very average detective story that left me wanting. The mystery itself is OK, although it moves along at a slow-to-medium pace. Character development was pretty good, especially the main character (Barbara), and the twists in the plotline were decent. However my biggest issue with this book was the way it was presented. It seemed that for every page of actual conversation, it was followed by three pages of Barbara's inner thoughts, repeatedly expressing her insecurities, her self-doubt, and her constant second-guessing over everything in her life. It became monotonous and repetitious as we the reader spent way too much time inside her head. Sure, I get the authors' intent to provide us with the turmoil she dealt with at every turn, but it became so repetitive with the same fears and doubts that several times I found myself checking to see how many more pages were left. The climax was also somewhat muddied, and in my opinion, didn't really tie everything up nice and tight, as it consisted of circumstantial assumptions rather than hard evidence regarding one suspect, nor did it even mention what became of the original suspect. And unlike some other reviewers, I wasn't the least bit surprised by the ending, either...saw it coming. Sorry, but three stars is the most I could muster for this one.

Author Maryann Miller writes a terrific mystery, full of exquisite action and suspense. I especially appreciate the surprise at the end ...didn't see that coming.

Readable police procedural story with the plot revolving around a serial killer. Some strong characterizations although I found some of the police department interactions a little strange and the mild romantic interest a bit of a stretch. I did find the ending a surprise but also a bit unrealistic.

Doubletake is a great beach read. Definitely not a bedtime read! I liked the protagonist, cop Barbara Hobkins. She felt like a real person, balancing her femininity against her profession. The plot is a bit familiar, but the pacing is tight and the story moves right along. All in all, a good way to spend a hot afternoon.
